I don’t know what to write

Every week like clockwork, our social media watch dog comes a callin’ for our blog posts.

That’s when I start to panic. I haven’t written it yet. Not because I don’t want to, but because I really don’t know what to write about.

What they don’t understand is that writing doesn’t come naturally to all of us. While our writers are off spouting Shakespeare for their next blog post, I’m still thinking about the title.

Coming up with something to write about, I kept chanting over and over again in my head, ‘I don’t know what to write!’ and voila, I had my title. Surely if I’m having trouble with where to start, others were having it too.

So, if you don’t know what to write, I would start with this:

Pick a topic and go with it
This is easily the hardest part of getting started, but you know what I like to do? Surf other blogs, look at what’s being featured on LinkedIn or just think about topics that came up with work recently.

Write like you would talk about it
I don’t try to write a novel (I’ll leave that to the writers) I try to write like I would discuss it. That’s the greatest thing about blogs; people are levitating towards conversations among peers instead of encyclopedia-type entries that need to be read more than once to be understood.

Ask for help
If you feel like something could be worded better, or that you have a topic but you don’t know where to start, ask somebody. Here in the office, our resident writer is always there to offer help with direction.

The last piece of advice? Sit down and do it. If you keep, keeping it off for another day, you’ll find that when the day comes, you haven’t done it.

Did you start writing?
